What To Expect In Your First Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Class

Stepping into your first Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) class can feel exciting - and maybe a little intimidating. At Space BJJ in Port Macquarie, our goal is to create a calm, supportive environment where everyone feels welcome from day one.

Here’s a quick guide to help you prepare for your first class.

You Don’t Need To Be Fit, Flexible Or Experienced

One of the biggest misconceptions about BJJ is that you need to “get fit first” — you don’t. Our fundamentals classes are designed for beginners of all ages and fitness levels. Everyone starts somewhere, and we’re here to help you build strength, confidence and technique over time.

What To Wear

For your first class, just wear comfortable activewear (like a t-shirt and shorts or tights). If you don’t have a gi (uniform), we’ll lend you one. Bring a water bottle, a positive attitude, and be ready to move.

What Happens In Class?

Most classes follow a simple structure:

  • Warm-up & mobility work

  • Technique of the day (taught step by step)

  • Partner drills or light positional work

  • Optional: Sparring or “rolling” for those who are ready

You’ll never be thrown in the deep end. We match students by size, skill level and comfort.

Will I Get Hurt?

Safety is one of our top priorities. BJJ is a contact martial art, but our classes are designed to minimise risk while you learn. All movements are taught with control, and you’re encouraged to tap out (submit) early and often. Our coaches are always watching to make sure everyone trains safely.

Do I Have To Spar?

Not at all. Sparring is optional - especially in your first few sessions. When you’re ready, we’ll guide you through it step by step.

Everyone Was A Beginner Once

It’s normal to feel a bit lost in your first class — but remember, every black belt was once a white belt. The team at Space BJJ is here to support your journey, answer questions, and help you feel at home on the mats.
